"For me it is personal. We are all survivors"

Dear Friend, My heart swells with pride and appreciation when someone makes the incredible decision to help a girl in need in Kampala. We’re so grateful for your support.

Today I want to introduce you to Nabuule (pictured above), with help from supporters like you, she was also able to make the decision to stand by girls in need too.

Nabuule is a survivor of domestic violence. She was subject to 14 years of physical and emotional abuse by her former husband. With the support from the team at Tusitukirewamu (our long-term sister organisation in Kampala), she was able to escape and start a new life.

She received counselling and completed our skills training course. She learnt how to make reusable sanitary pads.

She started her own business and began training girls how to make their own pads so they can stay in school when they have their periods. The business grew, and she has now trained more than 20,000 girls how to make their own pads – amazing!

Nabuule explains why her experience made her decide to become a Community Volunteer and why the projects you support are a lifeline for girls in Kampala

“For me it is personal. Most of us Community Volunteer are survivors. We want to make sure we are there for girls when they need us most. When you feel you are invisible because you have been battered and bullied. I want every woman and girl to know that we are seeking them. There is an escape. We are here to help you.

The Nansamba Safe Haven [Awamu’s shelter] is savings lives of girls escaping violence. There is no other place for them to go. I really thank you for your support to make sure girls can be safe.

For me learning a new skill thanks to Awamu, really gave me the opportunity to take back control of my life. I’m very happy I’m now able to give back to the community that helped me by volunteering. When we work together can we find strength and hold everyone accountable for their actions.”
