End of year celebrations

Graduates from Awamu’s tailoring course showing off the dresses they made for their assesment

We want to thank all our supporters for your kindness and generosity. We’re incredibly grateful to you for choosing to support us and stand by girls in the slums of Kampala.

When you support Awamu you are working alongside women and girls who live in the slums – our Community Volunteers, peer mentors, peer educators, foster mothers and students.

Their energy, passion and experience are the alchemy that turns your support into life-changing impact. Their work can be the difference between life and death for so many in their community. We celebrate your joint commitment to changing lives.

 Celebrations!

Today there have been very heavy rains in Kampala but it hasn’t ruined the celebrations! 50 more girls have graduated our six-month skills tailoring course.

Your support has given them the opportunity to gain a professionally recognised qualification. And the skills and confidence they need to go on to earn a living and take control of their lives.

A safe space all year round

Christmas is one of the hardest times of the year for young women and girls experiencing abuse.

Whilst our education and skills training projects are now closed for a few days before the new intake of girls join us in the new year, our refuge (our Nansamba Safe Haven) remains open so we can make sure more young women and children wake up safe and get the support they need this Christmas.

I felt safe in the refuge. They gave me the space and understanding I needed to overcome what had been happening to me. With their support I found a new safe place to live and they helped me to return to school.” Joan, 13 years.

We can only offer these life changing programmes with your help. Thank you again for your continued support.
