Welcome to our new Trustees

We are thrilled that we have two new trustees, Nabwire Joyce Baker and Rugambwa Justus, joining our board. They are both very familiar with and passionate about the work we do with our partners in Kampala. They bring new areas of expertise that will help us deliver even more of vital, life changing work.

Joyce is our new Chair. She is a Gender Specialist and Development Practitioner experienced in gender transformative programming, gender based violence prevention and response, and women’s economic empowerment programming. Sadly, all skills that we really need to be able to respond to what is happening in the communities where we work right now.

Joyce previously worked with DFID and United Nations on their joint gender equality programmes. Where amongst other successes, she coordinated the opening of 13 women protections centres which offer vital services to survivors of violence alongside economic empowerment programmes across Uganda. She currently leads on gender equality and inclusion programming in emergency and development contexts with Plan International.

Justus is a leader of community-based development programmes with a background in health systems, social enterprises, civil society advocacy and program leadership. He has managed projects as district project team leader, regional program manager, and national programs development manager with ActionAid Uganda, served as Executive Director of DENIVA, a Ugandan national NGO network and as CEO of Kvitova Mobile. He is currently the Uganda manager for Joining Forces, a consortium of six child focused international NGOs that aims for a stronger voice to promote and defend children’s rights in Uganda.

He is also partly responsible for connecting me to Regina, Flo and all the amazing women who inspired us to start Awamu in the first place.

We are inspired by both Justus and Joyce’s knowledge and experience and feel very lucky to have them board. We’re very excited about what we can achieve for vulnerable women and girls by working together.
Please welcome them on board.
