Meet Stella, our Project Manager

Every day, I have the privilege of working alongside an incredible team based in Kampala. Today, I'm thrilled to shine a spotlight on our exceptional Project Manager, Stella Nanbunya

Stella's commitment to women's rights runs deep, fueled by a passion to combat injustice wherever it lurks in our community. Witnessing the power imbalances and injustices faced by women first-hand, Stella explains that she knew she had to act. For her, advocating for women experiencing violence isn't just a job—it's a calling.

“Growing up, I witnessed the profound impact of my mother's advocacy and leadership. She was given a lot of freedom by her family, she was lucky to get an education and even became a local leader. She was a beacon of strength and resilience in her community. She instilled the values of equality and empowerment in me from an early age. She had a zero-tolerance approach towards gender-based violence (GBV). My mum paved the way for me to become the fierce advocate I am today.

“Joining this team was a natural fit for me. I was drawn by the passion and resilience of my colleagues. I saw a team dedicated to making a real difference. I also saw they operated differently from many organisations, much of the work we do is delivered or supported by a network of women Community Volunteers which means we understand what is happening in our community.

“For me addressing the issues of womens safety and rights is not just about addressing injustice, it is also about honouring the legacy of the women who came before me and paving the way for future generations.”

Through her work with Awamu, Stella is continuing her mother's legacy of empowerment, ensuring that every woman and girl has the opportunity to live a life free from violence and discrimination.

I'm incredibly proud to work alongside Stella and our passionate team in Kampala. Together, we're making strides towards a more just and equitable world for all. Join us in our mission to uplift women and girls, because when we empower them, we empower our communities.

Thank you for your support, it means everything to us.
